Mr. Ismo Malin, Head of Water Protection, Lahti Region Environmental Service,
North South Water Protection Seminar 2010
Mr. Ismo Malin concentrated on surface water protection in Lahti, considering Lake Vesijärvi and few smaller lakes. The biggest problem with the lakes is eutrophication but also rivers are strained because of waste water discharging. Even though Lake Vesijärvi has been improved remarkably from its worst state, the quality of water has been varying. Also, the lake has still experienced shortage of oxygen.

Ms. Mirka Autio, Planner, Lahti Region Environmental Service,
North South Water Protection Seminar 2010
Ms. Mirka Autio presented the recent findings in nutrient load monitoring of Lake Vesijärvi. The lake has a history of eutrophication and external load is still a problem. Monitoring the different sources of nutrients helps in finding the best ways and right places for decreasing the amount of nutrient loading. Nutrient monitoring includes monitoring of air fallout, storm waters and stream and river inflows.

Mr. Petrus Venter, Acting Director, Department of Water Affairs (DWA),
North South Water Protection Seminar 2010
Mr. Petrus Venter is a program leader of DWA for Harties metsi a me project which is aiming to rehabilitate a badly eutrophic water reservoir, Hartbeespoort Dam. Mr. Venter addressed the issue of desertification which is a severe problem in South Africa. When the vegetation is depleted, desertification proceeds rapidly as the lack of vegetation cover results in stronger heat radiation and the absence of clouds. According to Mr. Venter, the importance of vegetation should be considered more because it blocks out heat waves, wind and evaporation, decreases erosion as well as sustains biodiversity.

Mr. Sameer Morar, Program Manager, Rand Water Ltd,
North South Water Protection Seminar 2010
Mr. Sameer Morar told about the massive algal blooms and the poor water quality of the Hartbeespoort dam which cause environmental and health risks and restrict recreational activities. As the dam is still used as potable water source, the purification of water has become more and more challenging. Harties Metsi a Me programme has implemented several remediation operations both in the dam basin and in the catchment area. For example, food web restructuring has been started and biomass is harvested and removed. Also, shoreline vegetation has been re-established and floating wetlands constructed to support the food web restructuring.

Mr. Heikki Mäkinen, Program Director, Lake Vesijärvi Foundation,
North South Water Protection Seminar 2010
Mr. Heikki Mäkinen explored the issue of collaborative planning and stakeholder involvement in the remediation of Lake Vesijärvi. He highlighted the importance of social capital, i.e. commitment and mutual trust, in lake management. Social capital can be achieved through communication, collaboration and education. In the Lake Vesijärvi case, the most long lasting private-public cooperation has been between municipal authorities and local fishermen. This resulted in successful biomanipulation activities that are still ongoing. Nowadays, a more widespread cooperation between various stakeholders has been established.
